New Website, Who Dis? How I Built My Startup's Online Home From Scratch - Picking the Right Tech Stack
Choosing the right set of technologies to power your website and application is one of the most important decisions when starting a new project. The tech stack lays the foundation for how fast and securely your product will run, how quickly new features can be added, and how affordable it will be to maintain over time.
When Tamara Smith launched her latest startup, an online marketplace connecting home chefs with people looking for healthy meals, she knew picking the wrong stack could slow development to a crawl. “I talked to other founders who ended up having to completely rebuild because their original choice couldn’t scale properly. I wanted to avoid their mistakes,” said Smith.
She started by making a list of must-have features, like seamless payments, robust search, and responsive design. Smith then researched which stacks offered the best support for those capabilities out of the box. A MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js) seemed ideal for the app-like experience she envisioned.
However, Smith didn’t stop there. “You have to think long-term. The stack that makes the most sense now may not in 6 months or a year as your product and team grows,” she explained. She consulted her developers to ensure the stack would be flexible enough to add new features and team members down the road.
After considering factors like scalability, community support, and developer experience, Smith settled on a Jamstack (JavaScript, APIs + Markup) that could deliver on her current needs while allowing room to evolve. “I didn’t want to be locked into a rigid architecture. Jamstack gives us options to swap parts in and out as needed. It was the right foundation to start building on top of,” said Smith.
